Struggles with the way"The Handmaids tale" approaches gender RolesFor my Trending Topics blog I chose to dig into gender roles because as a woman I find gender roles to be very degrading to women for they limit what we can do. For my final blog post I chose to do a top ten list looking at the ten ways gender roles exists in The Handmaids Tale compared to ways gender roles existed before the women's rights movement. Features of the projectWhen first choosing this project I was planning on focusing on ways that gender roles were being broken in the book. However when I started reading The Handmaids Tale I found myself super frustrated because gender roles were not being broken but enforced throughout the novel. This conflict helped me develop a new way of approaching my topic. I began to realize that many of the roles stated in the novel were gender roles that greatly existed before the women’s rights movement. This helped me focus on ways that gender roles have changed and see that some no longer exist in the US. This helped me develop a more positive approach to gender roles because it showed me that it is a progressive topic revealing hope for the future. The text features experience really helped shape the structure of my blog. Normally when approaching a blog I just write them in a few decent length paragraphs but this can get boring to look at and stressful for the eyes to read. When I looked at the text features on other blogs I really liked how they had everything split up into short paragraphs. I also liked the way they had there quotes formatted, as a reader it helped me pay more attention to the quotes. These two text features essentially shaped my blog. The short paragraphs helped me come up with the idea of ten ways gender roles exist in the novel and ten ways they existed before the women's rights movement. The use of quotes helped me tie my ideas together with the bastards quotes from “The Handmaid's Tale”. Overall I feel focusing on other peoples text features helped me see new ways to write blog. Before this marking period I had never heard of taking book snaps. Honestly, at first I thought the concept of book snaps were really stupid and extra. As I was doing them I found them to be annoying because you had to stop reading in order to get a picture of the page. I also find it as a huge distraction due to the fact that when I would take a picture I would get distracted by the notifications on my phone. But, when I went to go start writing my blog I appreciated the book the snaps I had taken. The book snaps made it easier to remember where gender roles existed in the novel. It also helped me better organize my thoughts because I could look at the snaps and decide how I wanted to approach instead of writing on a sticky note exactly how I wanted to use it and feeling limited to my original thoughts. I believe not having an original intent with the snaps helped me have creative freedom when writing my blog post. Although I’m still not necessarily a huge fan of the book snaps because I get distracted easily, I do see the value in them and view them a necessary evil. Overall I believe this project helped me apply literature into everyday life. I believe this is a valuable thing to know because it's easy to read a book and think it is not a scenario that would ever exist in real life. This was the case for me with The Handmaids Tale, for it seemed very unlikely that the US would have a religious government take over and essentially lock up women. However, I was able to see real life value in this extreme take on gender roles which essentially shaped my learning experience and knowledge on gender roles. Also allowing me to see my big takeaway point which was that gender roles is a progressive topic. This reminded me that there is a positive side to gender roles because they have changed in a positive direction pretty dramatically over the last one hundred years. Overall this project was a good learning experience for me.
